Historian and Polar expert identifies a way Donald Trump could seize Greenland
There has been national news coverage for historian Dr Linda Parker after she warned that Donald Trump could take control of Greenland by cutting it off from the the world’s most lucrative shipping lane.
The US President’s vow to seize the semi-autonomous Danish territory could “hypothetically” be achieved by restricting Greenland’s access to the Northwest Passage (NWP) through a naval blockade, says the polar expert.
The 900-mile-long sea channel is said to be crucial to the island’s future income.
While the NWP is still largely inaccessible, when the Arctic Sea ice melts, which is predicted by 2045, it will become a vital shipping shortcut, slashing global trade routes by 4,000 miles and becoming the “trade route of all world trade routes”, says Dr Parker.
Without it, Greenland’s ability to trade internationally will be severely restricted, potentially leaving its economy “scuppered”.
