Touching a baby bump without consent is akin to groping her bottom or breasts, says Dr Haynes
There have been radio interviews for perinatal psychotherapist Dr Emma Haynes, who says that placing a hand on a pregnant woman’s stomach without consent is akin to groping her bottom or breasts.
Dr Haynes, who specialises in maternal mental illness, says that it is time for society to recognise that touching a baby bump or commenting on its size can cause some women “extreme alarm, distress and trauma”.
Whilst some women might appreciate the friendly gesture, many others experience this as intrusive and presumptive behaviour that is outdated in today’s society, she adds.
Dr Haynes is the author of A Transactional Analysis of Motherhood and Disturbances in the Maternal: From Preconception to Human Being, which is out now through Routledge.
The book delve deep into the psychological and emotional experiences of mothers, exploring how perinatal mental health plays a critical role in shaping the wellbeing of both mother and child.
